A regular site on flights from our Padworth site is the Englefield Estate in Berkshire. Here are some typical aerial pictures and views of Englefield Estate and Englefield House. The house and village sit on the site of a 9th century Saxon battlefield, giving rise to its name meaning Englishman’s battle field or field of angels.
The estate has been the family home of the Benyon family for over 250 years, who are recorded as members of parliament for Berkshire and neighboring constituencies at various times from 1860 to the modern day.
The majority of the current house originates from a late Elizabethan design with facelifts in the 18th and 19th centuries and has been painted by Constable and others in it’s time. However works on the house in the 19th century did unearth parts which clearly date back to the 16th century. http://www.berkshirehistory.com/castles/englefield_house.html Like many fine historic country houses Englefield House has been the scene of many well known films, the most recent being the Kings Speech starring Colin Firth.
The 400 year old gardens that surround the house including some 7th Century buildings are open to the public on Mondays from April to October. http://www.englefieldestate.co.uk/gardens.html
Over 25% of the estate is woodland, some of which is designated ancient woodland and has some public access both on foot and on bridleways. http://www.englefieldestate.co.uk/Woodlands.html
